CVE-2023-23463

About

Sunell DVR, latest version, Insufficiently Protected Credentials (CWE-522) may be exposed through an unspecified request.

Weakness (CWE):CWE-522

Rainforest analyst review

Sunell DVR devices insufficiently protect stored credentials, and an unspecified request can expose them. The described impact is confidentiality-only and rated low, so this is credential disclosure rather than a direct takeover, an attacker who can reach the device pulls credential material it should have kept protected. The vagueness of 'unspecified request' limits how precisely we can reason about the trigger.

Exposed credentials on a DVR matter mainly as a stepping stone: they can unlock the device's own admin functions or, if reused, other systems, and IP-based DVRs are a well-known target for botnets that harvest and reuse device credentials at scale. But the low confidentiality-only rating and the fact that it leaks credentials rather than granting immediate control keep this in the moderate tier rather than the critical one.

Because these are IoT surveillance appliances that tend to be deployed and forgotten, our lever is exposure plus credential hygiene: find which Sunell DVRs are reachable from untrusted networks, get them off the public internet, and assume any credentials they stored may be known, so anything reused elsewhere should be rotated. Inventory of the camera/DVR fleet is usually the weakest link we can strengthen fastest.
