CVE-2020-10374

About

A webserver component in Paessler PRTG Network Monitor 19.2.50 to PRTG 20.1.56 allows unauthenticated remote command execution via a crafted POST request or the what parameter of the screenshot function in the Contact Support form.

Weakness (CWE):CWE-20

Rainforest analyst review

An attacker sends a crafted POST to the PRTG web server, specifically abusing the screenshot function's parameter in the Contact Support form, and gets command execution without ever logging in. Remote, unauthenticated, no interaction, straight to running code on the monitoring server.

What makes this worse than a generic RCE is where PRTG sits. A network monitor holds credentials to the very infrastructure it watches, and a foothold on it is a foothold with a map and a keyring. Unauthenticated RCE in a recognizable product is exactly the profile mass scanners hunt, and the affected version band is narrow enough that the real question is simply which of your instances fall inside it.

Our angle is reachability. A PRTG console should almost never be internet-facing, so the first pass is finding any instance whose web server answers from outside, then confirming the version. That collapses the population fast: an internal-only, patched install is a low-priority ticket, while an exposed one in the vulnerable range is a drop-everything.
