CVE-2020-12323

About

Improper input validation in the Intel(R) ADAS IE before version ADAS_IE_1.0.766 may allow a privileged user to potentially enable escalation of privilege via local access.

Weakness (CWE):CWE-20

Rainforest analyst review

Improper input validation in Intel's ADAS IE software lets an already-privileged local user escalate further. Both the local-access and high-privilege requirements are load-bearing here: this isn't a remote door, it's a way for someone with existing elevated access on the machine to gain more.

The combination of a niche piece of specialized Intel software, local-only reach, and a privileged-user precondition puts this far outside the territory of mass exploitation. It's the kind of finding that matters to a targeted actor already resident on a specific system, not something that shows up in internet-wide scan traffic.

Our first move is simply establishing whether this software runs anywhere in the estate at all, because for most fleets the answer is no and the CVE is moot. Where it does exist, it belongs in a routine patch pass, ranked down from its 6.7 given how heavily gated the exploit path is.
