CVE-2020-17453

About

WSO2 Management Console through 5.10 allows XSS via the carbon/admin/login.jsp msgId parameter.

Weakness (CWE):CWE-79

Rainforest analyst review

A reflected XSS lives in the WSO2 Management Console's login page, in the msgId parameter. Being reflected, it isn't stored on the server; an attacker has to craft a URL and get a victim to click it, at which point script runs in that victim's browser session.

The payoff an attacker wants is a management-console session, so a successful lure against an admin is worth something. But the reflected nature plus the required user interaction make this a phishing-style vector rather than an unauthenticated takeover, which tempers the urgency.

Because the advisory spans a whole family of WSO2 products, our first job is inventory and exposure: which of these components are deployed and, more importantly, which expose their management console where an outside attacker could feed a victim the crafted link. Detection of the malicious parameter pattern is a reasonable interim control.
