Weakness (CWE):CWE-502

Rainforest analyst review

The flaw is deserialization of untrusted data in on-premises SharePoint Server: the server accepts attacker-supplied serialized objects and reconstructs them into live code, letting an unauthenticated attacker run commands over the network. Microsoft confirmed exploitation in the wild before a complete fix shipped — the dangerous gap where the technique is public but the patch isn’t.

On-prem SharePoint is a soft target for exactly this kind of bug: a large, old, deeply-integrated application that tends to hold a company’s documents and sits wired into Active Directory, usually still self-hosted because migrating is hard, not because it’s well-patched. A pre-auth RCE there is a foothold into the document store and often a stepping stone toward domain compromise. Because exploitation preceded the fix, patching is necessary but not sufficient: rotate SharePoint machine keys, hunt for planted web shells, and review what the service account could reach — the attacker may already be inside.
