CVE-2022-1388
About
On F5 BIG-IP 16.1.x versions prior to 16.1.2.2, 15.1.x versions prior to 15.1.5.1, 14.1.x versions prior to 14.1.4.6, 13.1.x versions prior to 13.1.5, and all 12.1.x and 11.6.x versions, undisclosed requests may bypass iControl REST authentication. Rainforest analyst review
F5 BIG-IP's iControl REST management API can be reached without valid credentials because of a flaw in how requests are authenticated: by manipulating connection headers and the `X-F5-Auth-Token` handling, an attacker convinces the system that a request arrived over a trusted local channel. That bypass grants access to authenticated REST endpoints, several of which run system commands, so an unauthenticated attacker with network access to the management interface achieves root command execution on the appliance.
BIG-IP sits directly in the traffic path as a load balancer, application firewall, and VPN/access gateway, terminating TLS and holding the keys and session material for the applications behind it. A pre-auth root RCE there is a full compromise of the enforcement point protecting everything downstream, which is why mass scanning and exploitation began within days of disclosure. The immediate mitigations F5 published — restricting iControl REST to trusted addresses and removing management-interface exposure — matter as much as the patch, because the management plane should never be internet-reachable. Given how fast this was weaponized, hunt for signs of prior exploitation rather than assuming patching alone closed the window.
