CVE-2023-47246

About

In SysAid On-Premise before 23.3.36, a path traversal vulnerability leads to code execution after an attacker writes a file to the Tomcat webroot, as exploited in the wild in November 2023.

Weakness (CWE):CWE-22

Rainforest analyst review

A path traversal flaw in SysAid On-Premise lets an unauthenticated attacker write a file to a location outside the intended upload directory, specifically into the Tomcat webroot. Once a JSP payload sits in the webroot, the attacker requests it and the application server executes it, turning a file-write primitive into remote code execution on the SysAid host with the privileges of the service.

This was exploited in the wild in November 2023 as a zero-day, with the activity attributed to the operators behind the Clop ransomware ecosystem, so exposure to this bug means the exploitation likely predates the fix and hunting must accompany patching. SysAid is IT service-management software that sits centrally with broad reach into an organization's assets and administrative workflows, making a compromised instance a strong pivot point. Upgrade to 23.3.36 or later, then inspect the Tomcat webroot for unexpected JSP or WAR files, review the SysAid host for web shells and unusual child processes, and rotate service and administrative credentials tied to the deployment before treating the incident as closed.
