CVE-2022-23227

About

NUUO NVRmini2 through 3.11 allows an unauthenticated attacker to upload an encrypted TAR archive, which can be abused to add arbitrary users because of the lack of handle_import_user.php authentication. When combined with another flaw (CVE-2011-5325), it is possible to overwrite arbitrary files under the web root and achieve code execution as root.

Weakness (CWE):CWE-306

Rainforest analyst review

The NUUO NVRmini2 exposes handle_import_user.php with no authentication check, so an unauthenticated attacker can upload a crafted, encrypted TAR archive and use it to add arbitrary user accounts — including administrators. Chained with an older path-traversal flaw in how the archive is extracted (CVE-2011-5325), the same upload writes files outside the intended directory, overwriting content under the web root and yielding code execution as root.

The NVRmini2 is a network video recorder — surveillance infrastructure that sits quietly on networks, is frequently reachable from the internet, and rarely receives attention after install. Devices in this class are long-standing targets for botnet operators precisely because they are powerful, always-on, and unpatched, and NUUO recorders have a history of exactly this kind of pre-auth compromise. Treat exposed units as end-of-life liabilities: pull them off the public internet, segment the camera network, and replace hardware that no longer receives fixes rather than trusting a firmware update to hold.
