CVE-2023-26609

About

ABUS TVIP 20000-21150 devices allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via shell metacharacters in the /cgi-bin/mft/wireless_mft ap field.

Rainforest analyst review

ABUS TVIP 20000-21150 cameras let an attacker execute arbitrary code by slipping shell metacharacters into the ap field of /cgi-bin/mft/wireless_mft. That is classic command injection on an embedded device, unsanitized input reaching a shell, yielding code execution as the camera's web process. The metrics list high privileges as a precondition, so reaching the vulnerable handler requires elevated access on the device rather than an anonymous request.

IP cameras are staple botnet fodder, and command injection is the exact bug class that gets them conscripted, but the high-privilege requirement here tempers the usual drive-by story, an attacker needs to already hold elevated access to trigger it. The offsetting reality is that cameras are frequently deployed with default or weak credentials and exposed to the internet, which can make clearing the privilege bar easier than the metric implies.

For us this is exposure plus credential hygiene on the camera fleet. We would locate any TVIP 20000-21150 units reachable from untrusted networks, get them off the public internet, and ensure their admin credentials are strong and unique so the privilege precondition stays a real barrier. Where firmware fixes lag, network isolation of the camera VLAN is the durable control.
