Weakness (CWE):CWE-863

Rainforest analyst review

This is a misconfiguration flaw in Adobe Experience Manager, affecting AEM Forms on version 6.5.23 and earlier, that leads to arbitrary code execution. A default or insecure configuration lets an unauthenticated attacker bypass the intended security mechanisms and reach functionality that executes attacker-supplied code on the server, with no user interaction required and with a scope change that extends impact beyond the immediately vulnerable component.

AEM is an enterprise content and forms platform that typically runs public-facing web properties for large organizations, so the vulnerable component sits on internet-exposed infrastructure and code execution there can expose customer data and provide a pivot into internal systems. Given how attractive a pre-auth RCE on a widely deployed enterprise CMS is, exposed instances should be prioritized and inspected rather than simply scheduled for a later maintenance window. Apply Adobe's fix and correct the insecure configuration per Adobe's guidance, keep AEM author and forms instances off the public internet where they do not need to be there, and review the affected hosts for unexpected process execution, planted files, and anomalous requests to the forms endpoints.
