CVE-2020-5146

About

Weakness (CWE):CWE-78

Rainforest analyst review

An authenticated management user on the SonicWall SMA100 appliance can inject OS commands through HTTP POST parameters, gaining execution on the device. The vector's high-privilege requirement is the defining constraint: this needs a management-level account, not just any reachable session.

SMA appliances are internet-facing VPN gateways and perennial targets, which is what gives any bug here weight. But the PR:H requirement pulls this toward an insider or credential-theft scenario rather than a straight unauthenticated grab, so it's most dangerous as the second stage of a chain that starts with stolen management credentials.

We rank it accordingly, serious because of where the device sits, but tempered by the privilege precondition, and think about it as part of a chain rather than in isolation. The concrete steps are firmware inventory of SMA100 units, tight restriction of who can reach the management plane, and watching for the credential-theft that would unlock this in the first place.
