CVE-2023-29369

About

Remote Procedure Call Runtime Denial of Service Vulnerability

Weakness (CWE):CWE-190

Rainforest analyst review

The Windows RPC Runtime can be driven into a denial of service by this flaw, triggered by an attacker with low privileges. The impact is availability-only, no code execution, no data exposure, and it affects the Server 2012 through 2022 line. The 6.5 reflects a disruption-grade issue rather than anything that grants an attacker control or access.

DoS against a core runtime is annoying but bounded: it can degrade or interrupt services relying on RPC, yet it requires an authenticated low-privilege foothold and yields the attacker no persistence or escalation on its own. There is no unauthenticated internet-spray dynamic here, so the exploitation tempo is modest and the realistic scenario is an already-present low-tier account causing disruption.

We rank this in the routine tier and let it flow through the standard Patch Tuesday cadence for the affected Server versions. Given the availability-only impact and the privilege precondition, there is little to virtually patch; our attention is better spent confirming rollup coverage on those servers than treating this as an out-of-band concern.
