CVE-2024-28735
About
Unit4 Financials by Coda versions prior to 2023Q4 suffer from an incorrect access control authorization bypass vulnerability which allows an authenticated user to modify the password of any user of the application via a crafted request.
Rainforest analyst review
Unit4 Financials by Coda fails to check authorization properly on a password-change action, so an authenticated user can craft a request that resets any other user's password. That turns a foothold as an ordinary user into control of any account they choose, including higher-privileged ones, by simply seizing the credential.
On a financials platform this is account-takeover with direct business consequence: whoever owns the right account can approve, alter, or exfiltrate financial records. The bug needs a valid low-privilege login to start, so it isn't a wide-open internet smash, but any environment with many users, self-service accounts, or a compromised low-level credential is one request away from privilege escalation across the whole application.
We frame this as a chaining and lateral-movement risk rather than a perimeter one. The defenders' leverage is watching for the specific abuse — unexpected password-change requests targeting other users — and tightening who holds application accounts at all. Given the finance context, we'd prioritize this above its 8.1 in any tenant where user provisioning is loose, because the step from 'a user' to 'the finance admin' here is a single crafted call.
