These D-Link network-attached storage devices — DNS-320L, DNS-325, DNS-327L, DNS-340L and related models — expose `/cgi-bin/nas_sharing.cgi`, which contains a hard-coded backdoor account. An attacker sends an HTTP GET request supplying the built-in `messagebus` username with an empty or fixed password and is authenticated as a valid user. The same interface carries a command-injection weakness, so once past the hard-coded credential the attacker runs arbitrary commands on the device with no legitimate access required.
All of the affected models are end-of-life, and D-Link has confirmed it will not patch them, so there is no fix to apply — only mitigation and replacement. Exploit details are public and these devices were swept up quickly into IoT botnet activity, since a large installed base of internet-exposed, unpatchable NAS boxes is exactly what mass scanners look for. The only sound response is to remove these units from the internet immediately, and ideally retire and replace them; if one must stay online temporarily, isolate it on a segment with no inbound exposure and treat any already-exposed device as compromised.
