CVE-2024-38055

This is an information-disclosure flaw in the Windows Codecs Library, triggered locally, where malformed media processed by the codec can leak data it shouldn't. Microsoft's description is terse by design, but the shape is a local, low-privilege read primitive rather than a remote or code-execution bug, which is reflected in its mid-range score.

Codec-parsing disclosure bugs are usually valuable as one piece of a larger chain — a way to leak memory that defeats a mitigation before a separate execution bug lands — rather than as a standalone crisis. The local vector and disclosure-only impact mean this isn't something scanned and mass-exploited across the internet; it matters most on multi-user or attacker-present endpoints.

For us this is straightforward patch-cadence work. It rides in on the normal Windows update stream, and given the broad range of Windows 10 and 11 builds listed, the practical task is confirming our fleet's update coverage rather than any special mitigation. We rank it as moderate: worth closing on schedule, not worth an out-of-band scramble, but not to be ignored on endpoints where untrusted media gets processed.
