About

Multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco Small Business RV160, RV260, RV340, and RV345 Series Routers could allow an attacker to do any of the following: Execute arbitrary code Elevate privileges Execute arbitrary commands Bypass authentication and authorization protections Fetch and run unsigned software Cause denial of service (DoS) For more information about these vulnerabilities, see the Details section of this advisory.

Weakness (CWE):CWE-121CWE-787

Rainforest analyst review

This advisory bundles multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco Small Business RV160, RV260, RV340, and RV345 routers, and the combined effect is about as bad as it gets: an attacker can execute arbitrary code, elevate privileges, run arbitrary commands, bypass authentication and authorization, load and run unsigned software, and cause denial of service. The stack-based buffer overflows behind it, reachable remotely with no authentication and a changed scope, mean the router — the network's edge and gateway — can be fully taken over from outside.

Small-business routers are a perennial mass-exploitation target because they're internet-facing by function, often run with default or forgotten management exposure, and are seldom patched by the small organizations that own them. Unauthenticated RCE on the gateway is exactly what botnets and access brokers hunt for: a compromised edge router yields traffic interception, persistence outside the reach of host security tools, and a pivot into everything behind it. The ability to load unsigned software is especially grim, since it enables durable, firmware-level implants.

Our angle is internet-reachability triage first, because these devices live at the perimeter. We'd inventory any RV160/RV260/RV340/RV345 in scope and immediately determine whether their web management is exposed to the internet, restricting it and applying Cisco's fixed firmware as the priority action. Given the caliber of the bug and the target class, we'd rank exposed units at the very top and, because edge devices get compromised early and quietly, look for signs of tampering rather than assume a clean patch is the end of it.

How severe is CVE-2022-20700?

CVE-2022-20700 carries a CVSS 3.1 base score of 10, rated critical. On the Rainforest Risk Index — which weighs the severity alongside how easy the flaw is to reach and how broad its impact is — it scores 100 out of 100, in the critical band.

How is CVE-2022-20700 exploited?

According to the CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H): attack vector Network, attack complexity Low, privileges required None, user interaction None. Impact on confidentiality High, integrity High and availability High.

Which products are affected by CVE-2022-20700?

Public advisories list the following as affected: rv160, rv160 firmware, rv160w, rv160w firmware, rv260, rv260 firmware, +12. Check the references on this page for the exact versions each vendor confirms.

How do I fix CVE-2022-20700?

Apply the fix the vendor published — the references on this page link to the primary advisories and patches. When patching can't happen right away, reduce the exposure of the affected component and watch it for exploitation attempts. Rainforest customers see this vulnerability correlated to their own assets and prioritized by real exposure, not by score alone.
