CVE-2023-34928
About
A stack overflow in the Edit_BasicSSID function of H3C Magic B1STV100R012 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via a crafted POST request.
Rainforest analyst review
The honest read on this one is that it crashes the box, nothing more. A crafted POST request to the Edit_BasicSSID function on the H3C Magic B1ST overflows a stack buffer, and the impact is denial of service — the vector confirms availability loss only, with no confidentiality or integrity impact. An attacker can knock the router offline remotely, but the advisory claims no code execution, and we won't inflate a DoS into an RCE it isn't described as being.
That said, stack overflows on embedded devices sometimes mature into code execution once someone invests in exploit development, so the memory-write primitive is worth respecting even when today's proven impact is a reboot. For now the realistic threat is disruption: an unauthenticated attacker who can reach the web interface can repeatedly drop the connection for everyone behind it.
We rank this beneath the RCE-class bugs in the same batch precisely because its demonstrated ceiling is availability. Our attention goes to exposure — is the management interface reachable from anything untrusted — and we tag the CWE-787 write as a watch item in case follow-on research upgrades the impact. For a home-gateway DoS, network placement does more for us than a firmware chase.
